Christmas, Gifts and Embroidery (Ezine Ready)

Once the Thanksgiving rush is over, the real rush begins for many of us! Between shopping, cooking, baking and visiting, we also have our handmade gifts to finish up.

Because making quilts is so in depth and time consuming, I usually don’t include quilts as part of my gift-giving this time of year. Instead, I take full advantage of all the creative and inspirational embroidery patterns that are now available. Some of them are time consuming, but I can do other things while the embroidery machine merrily stitches on its own!

For the very simplest gifts, I purchase towels in my recipients’ favorite colors and then add a simple monogram. This is quick and easy, and creates a classy project for all ages and genders. When stitching on loopy towels, I add a layer of tulle (netting) over the top of the towel in the hoop. Then, when I stitch out the letters, the stitching stays on top of the towel instead of sinking into the weave. Once done, I gently tear away the excess tulle. Anything left is barely noticeable. This is one of my most important embroidery tips!

Gifts for co-workers are generally harder to decide on, so I stick with my tried and true choice of embroidery designs in the free-standing lace category. Ornaments are quick and easy to make in any color and are simply finished with a colorful ribbon for hanging. I always use two layers of water soluble stabilizer and the same thread in top and bobbin for the very best embroidery results!

My all-time favorite embroidery pattern for Christmas is one that creates a fabulously large stocking, all in free-standing lace. Each motif is stitched out and then zig-zagged together with the other pieces. A simple fabric for the back, and a beautiful, old-fashioned stocking is the result. This type of embroidery takes a while, but the results are well worth it. I fill my stockings with individually wrapped chocolates and other fabulous treats. I find it easiest to stitch the motifs together before washing out the water-soluble stabilizer!

Because most people have their own idea of what they want their home to look like at the holidays, I stay away from making home décor items with a Christmas theme. Also, it’s always struck me as odd to give someone something to decorate their holiday home with on the actual holiday! Instead, I will make elegant tone-on-tone projects like doilies or napkins. Single-color designs are perfect for this, but it is a lot of fun to take multi-color embroidery designs and choose several tones of the same color to create a beautifully ornate project. Be sure to use the same color thread in your bobbin so that your project looks beautiful on both sides!

Christmas is the perfect time of year to search for new free embroidery designs! Digitizers are a generous group, and we all love to share … especially at the holidays. If you do find a free design that is your favorite for the season, be sure to let the designer know, and send pictures of your projects! This is the best way to show your appreciation.

Finally, don’t forget to stitch a beautiful embroidery for yourself as well! As much as we love being able to create handmade gifts for others, it is important to remember to give a gift to yourself as well. Give yourself the gift of self-appreciation.

Happy Holidays!

More than one way to make soap (Ezine Ready)

Soap is the most important invention of the world. It not just retains the bacteria away from hands and body, but also gives a fresh sensation to the particular person. The uses of soap depend primarily upon its ingredients. Some soap is used for cleaning and washing of garments, while some are used for bathing purposes. No matter, for what purpose the soap is used for, it is an important part of our day to day lives. The background of the soap and soap making can be dated back to 2800 BC to the time of Babylon.

In that time, the items that were used in soap were primarily consisted of drinking water and oils. in the course of Romans, the ingredients were changed from oil to animal fat and included ashes too. The historical past shows that the word soap was originated in the course of the Roman times, but the word soap has been taken from Latin word sopa. Moreover, the making of soaps was first examineed by the Zosimos of Panopolis. The modern shape of cleaning agents was introduced in the market place during the 15th and 20th century, mainly by the natives of France.

Since 2800 BC, until now, the ingredients and the uses of soaps changed vigorously. In each passing era, there was some person who defined and redefined the making of soap and its uses. In addition, more than one way to make soap was discovered in each era. The modern shapes, colours and smell of sequences are mainly due to many years of experiments and conclusions. In past, soap making was mostly done in the premises of the house for particular person uses. However, as the importance of soap became a common knowledge, it was produced on a large scale by the companies and groups. Still, many homes like to make their own soap for their own uses.

There is more than one way to make soap and every organization or household uses their distinctive approach to manufacture soap. We will go over more than one way to make soap on an industrial scale and in homes. However, first to make soap the person or the companies have to decide on its type and its purpose. The purpose of the soap will identify the ingredients that will be required in soap making. After identifying the purpose of the soap, the next step is to select the strategy of preparation. As, there are more than one strategy to make a soap, the person or the company can select them according to their ease.

The first and the most famous strategy for preparation of soap is called the cold technique soap. In this procedure, the fatty acids are mixed with the alkaline substance. The alkaline compound principally used at home for soap making is sodium hydroxide. This technique is primarily preferred because it doesnt involve any heating and melting course of action. The next strategy that is used for making soap is the melt and decants course of action. This method is used for making scented and coloured soaps at a more compact scale. In this procedure, the large blocks of sequences are melted and mixed with fragrance and shade. This mixture is then poured into different moulds to give different shapes.

Although, there are more than one way to make soap, but the group or person need to select the approach that requires minimum ingredients and produces significant quantity. Having more than one way to make soap is helpful for the companies because it adds variety to the soap.

Getting Embroidery designs online (Ezine Ready)

As I sit with my well-deserved cup of cappuccino at my favorite little coffee bar, recovering from a bit of Christmas shopping, I am reminded of why I love this little section of Greece so much. While the day began cold and rainy, it is currently sunny and my coat has been entrusted to the patio chair beside me. The weather here, while extreme, is always presenting these little moments of delight.

The feeling I have right now, including the physical tiredness, is much the same as when I stitch out new embroidery designs . There is just something so magical about a bit of free-standing lace with so little effort or a perfect appliqué patch with just the touch of a button!

While I have sewn and quilted since I was six years old, I resisted adding machine embroidery to my repertoire because I had no real need for it, nor did I think I had time for it. Finally, for no real reason, I added the first of many embroidery machines to my studio.

My son and I spent several fun hours test stitching the designs that came with the machine. At the age of 13, and with no sewing experience, he picked it up as quickly as I did! In fact, he continued to test designs while I went to prepare dinner that night. That was a definite moment of delight.

It didn’t take me long to realize that the dozen designs that came with the machine weren’t going to be enough to keep me happy. I began looking at the commercial designs for machine embroidery that were available and immediately got depressed because I knew there was no way I could afford even a small portion of the ones I wanted.

Luckily, I soon discovered online groups and independent sellers of embroidery designs! This was a treasure trove I had never expected and a huge moment of delight when I realized that there were also many free embroidery designs available! The fact that I needed a special card reader/writer device to get the designs from my computer to the machine didn’t dampen my enthusiasm at all. While I waited for it to arrive, I downloaded many free designs and learned more than I could ever hope to remember about techniques and all types of embroidery supplies.

Little by little, I discovered that I did have time for machine embroidery and a multitude of uses for it. Christmas that year was all about free-standing lace bowls and embroidered bread cloths! Any towel not in the hamper was fair game for monogramming, and even the bed sheets weren’t safe from random hooping.

Every new design stitched or technique learned was a moment of delight.

I’m happy that I can take a break from my stitching and still feel the delight while sitting outside with my coffee, watching the lovely Greek people bustle about. Today, I can even say, “ochi parakallo” (no, thank you) to the vendors of bootleg movies and genuine Rolex watches with a smile in my heart.

Be sure to invite delight into your world!

Crazy Patch Quilt (Ezine Ready)

Are you feeling down in the dumps, restless, and just do not know what to do with your idle time? You are not able to decide if you want to stay indoors or to do an activity outdoors. It is an undecided crazy emotional moody type of day. Quilting artists, this is your day to design a crazy patch quilt.

Your restlessness and undecided emotional swings are great for creativity. It reminds me of a caterpillar getting restless and moving about until it breaks out of its cocoon and becomes a beautiful butterfly.

Pull out your scrap fabrics, a sheet of paper, and a pencil and start designing your block or blocks. No hard rules are needed to design a crazy patch quilt. Be loose and open to trying new things. Place no restrictions on yourself. Do one block. If you are not happy with your design, throw the sheet of paper away and draw another.

After you have your drawing completed, look at your scraps and arrange them to meet your completed illustration.

Your idle time is no longer being wasted; time is now precious and needed to make a crazy patch quilt.

Two projects can now be accomplished. Pull out some construction paper or white paper and paints. Cut the geometrics or figures into make-believe fabric scraps. Draw or paint designs to mimic what you will be doing with the fabric scraps. Paste or glue the pieces onto a larger sheet of paper.

This will allow you to preview your crazy patch quilt before you actually cut your chosen scraps and stitch them into position as planned. This first project may be framed, placed on an end table, used as a wall hanging or placed in your quilt idea scrapbook to be used as a future pattern.

The second project is the stitched crazy patch quilt. You may choose to make one block or many blocks depending on the size of your project.

Since it is one of those days, consider converting your square quilt to a round or triangular shape. After assembling the pieces cut into a large circle or a triangle; a new world will immerge.

If you are hesitant to cut the fabric return to your paper drawing and cut it. Are you too nervous to cut your paper quilt? Make copies of it and cut the copies.

Crazy quilts are great because:

  1. All types of embellishments can be used
  2. Utilize any fabric scrap types and textures
  3. Mix muted colors or bright colors
  4. Arrange prints, stripes, and novelty fabrics in any order
  5. Choose your colors including light, medium, and dark
  6. Fabrics can be wool, cotton, satin, velvet, sheers, netting, ribbons, suede, leather, polyester blends, and more

Assembling your crazy patch quilt:

  1. Cut your fabric swatches into desired shapes of squares, rectangles, petals, hearts, triangles, octagons, hexagons, as well as irregular shapes. Connect the different pieces using the standard ¼ inch seam allowance.
  1. Place these irregular cuts on any fabric of choice. Use muslin, cotton, or any other fabric which suits your quilting project.
  1. After all of the pieces of the crazy patch quilt have been stitched together, use a  square ruler to measure accurately and cut away excess fabric for the desired size. Or as mentioned earlier, cut a large circle, triangle, or any other shape you desire.
  1. Be wild and crazy with embellishments. This is your time to stitch the decorative icing on the cake. Use trims, beads, sequins, feathers, cording, buttons, jewelry, ribbon, embroidery, appliqués, yarns, fabric paint, and stenciling. These items are not only decorating the entire block but they are also covering exposed seams or errors.
  1. After the crazy patch quilt block has been completed, attach borders, batting, and backing and finish it as you would with any other quilt.

Bold and Beautiful Crepe Paper Decorations (Ezine Ready)

Do you have a stack of crepe paper and a birthday party, shower, wedding or special occasion party to decorate for? We are going to look at some bold and beautiful crepe paper decorations you can use for nearly any special event. Just when you thought, crepe paper was merely for gift wrapping and specific crafts such as paper flowers!

In this article, we are going to look at a few ideas that will help you make bold and beautiful crepe paper decorations for any event whether it be a wedding or a Super bowl party. You already have the crepe paper and shears. You will also need clear drying glue. In addition, you may have some ideas of your own so whatever craft items you want to contribute make sure you have those items.

The first idea we are going to look at is how to turn an ordinary (plastic works best) bowl into a piece of art to hold your chips and dip. This project is very simple. You will need to either make stripes of crepe paper or if you are looking for a more specific decoration style, you can use craft punchers these are found at both dollar and craft stores. They are a small handheld plastic design puncher, similar to a whole puncher but instead of punching a whole through the paper you can choose from several other items such as hearts, dolphins, stars, flowers, or any other number of items. You will most likely be able to find exactly the item you are looking for. The best part is these design punchers are fairly inexpensive and can be used for other projects so you will most certainly get your money’s worth.

For example, let us say you are hosting a baby shower. You can use pink and blue strips of crepe paper and attach them to the bowls with the clear drying glue or you can find a design puncher that has a baby item on it and punch out several of them using the crepe paper. Then simply glue the paper item to the bowl. This decorating idea is not only inexpensive it looks great and best of all you can design anything you want to set the theme of the baby shower or any other party you are planning.

Let us look at one more project idea using the same concept of the crepe paper and design punchers. You can make wonderful homemade gifts such as bath salts, hot chocolate mixes, or a baked good mixture by pouring the ingredients into a jar. Following the same concept and directions, choose a design that goes with the gift or the occasion you are giving the gift for and decorate the jars. Then you will have beautiful handmade gifts or party favors. Bold and beautiful crepe paper decorations are not hard to make all you need is a little creativity and a few supplies!

Machine Embroidery Designs: Traditional vs Fresh (Ezine Ready)

I recently bought 50 pounds of remnant fabrics from a curtain factory. The money goes to charity, so it’s a good option, even if I don’t use the fabric right away. As it is, this antique satin style fabric is fraying horribly. I spend a couple of hours a day serging over the raw edges to save my sanity and the integrity of my sewing room (cleanliness doesn’t exist here).

While doing this mindless stitching, my mind fills with the beautiful colors of the fabrics and many ideas for projects come to mind: placemats, table runners, vests, embroidered quilts and other embroidery projects. I also came to the realization that many people don’t seem to take risks in their lives.

About 35 pounds of the 50 are in shades of white or cream. The rest are made up of sage green, light blue and silver, with minute amounts of reds, browns, and blacks. Since colorful room decoration is all the rage, this actually surprised me. I’m generally a safe decorator with everything in neutral tones, but in the past couple of years I’ve redone my entire living, dining and kitchen areas in all shades of red, including pinks and purples. Since my rooms have tons of windows and high ceilings, this color drenching doesn’t overwhelm. It’s also beautiful to walk into after braving the frigid rain or snow outside!

From here, I began to think about all the machine embroidery designs out there. Some are very traditional while others are quite new and fresh. However, even the modern styles tend to be stitched in understated, mild colors. Is this because we crave a gentle, feminine touch? Or, as I truly suspect, is it because we are secretly afraid of color?

I thought about my own embroidery projects. I tend to stay with traditional designs but change the colors to suit my tastes. Black is always welcome here. When the men of my family are asked to choose, they pick the modern embroidery designs with traditional colors. Very interesting. I’ve read that women are capable of seeing more colors than men, so maybe that explains the difference.

I’m sure we all know someone who has lost their motivation to create, even when new fabulous free embroidery designs are available. When pictures are available of their previous projects, a pattern seems to emerge where they use the same types of designs or the same light colors repeatedly. Instead of being burned out, I think they are just bored.

We tend to want embroidery designs that depict the holiday or season through imagery … Easter eggs and bunnies, hearts and lips, Santa and ornaments, etc. We allow the picture to tell the story. Instead, we should be telling our story through our own interpretation.

For Christmas this year, why not use any type of embroidery design, but color it uniquely for the holiday? Red and green are beautiful, but blue and gold are also quite traditional, while still being different. If red and green are more your style, why not try khaki green and fuchsia or seafoam green and mauve? Even a fluorescent green and pink can add a fun touch!

Give yourself the gift of spontaneity! Do something just for you in colors that speak to you. Don’t worry about the finished project. As I’ve said before, embroidery is key and color makes it complete.

How To Make Silver Wire Jewellery (Ezine Ready)

Beading design and patterns and crimping techniques and silver wire working methods  are the cornerstone of unique homemade silver wire jewellery. Handmade beaded silver wire jewellery is an expression of individual creativity whether it is in the form of necklaces, bracelets, pendants, brooches, earrrings. Each piece is tailored to be unique and reflect the owners personality.

Before you exercise care when creating the design of your personalised silver wire jewellery you should consider the materials to be used.  Plastic lace and velcro are frequent choices for the materials to be used in the strings. Allthough beads can come in any size and pattern with either crystal or frosted or clear or glowing styles, they all have to threaded on strings or wires.

Once each bead has been inserted on a wire, crown knots seal the beads or they are crimped by beading pliers. In this way, beads can be arranged as an even pattern on either strings or wires.  Thinner wires with gauge of 0.3mm are ideal for threading beads whereas gauges of 1mm diameter silver wire can be available as either square to be used for bracelets  or round  to be used to create loops or  what is called half-round where jewellery pieces are connected. Silver wire is categorised in gauges ranging from size 0 to 26 as is copper wire and galvanized wire.  Sterling silver jewellery endures better than fine silver jewellery. Silver wire has to be manipulated by jewellery pliers to bend and stretch and straighten jewellery or ensure the creation of round loops.

Silver wire jewellery is manufactured by crocheting and crimping wire. Essential kit required is the crochet hook to design bracelets and rings from silver wire or gold fill wire. Soft silver wire jewellery does not require beading pliers and can be manually manipulated for beading and the design of elaborate personalised jewellery.

Beading combinations determine the patterns by arrangements of colours and sizes and styles for decorative effect. When making necklaces, patterns are created by arrangements of beads. To secure the arrangement of beads on necklaces, crimping is required.

Here is a brief explanation of crimping.  To secure your wires together to a clasp you have to thread silver wire through a metal tube and then through the clasp and rethread through the clasp and metal tube back in the reverse direction. Keep both wires apart and impress oval shape. Flatten the metal tube in the centre. So now, you have two separate paths for both silver wire strings. Next, fold the metal tube back. Wires should be cut back.

Silver wire jewellery rings are made by a simple technique where two pairs of pliers will open the ring and then close and compress your silver ring design just by moving both pairs of pliers sideways apart and then reversing direction so that they pass each other.

Silver wire jewellery with beaded chains requires the creation of loops at the end. Wire should be reshaped to a 90 degree angle following the beads. Trim it all off apart from enough to twist the end of the silver wire into a tail to seal the loop. This is how you turn the loop.

Besides this, you create twisted silver wire effects by wrapping the loop. Once the bead is threaded on the wire, apply the pliers to bend the pin in a circle to create the loop then keep coiling the wire manually until the bead is reached. Trim and tuck the wire into the foundation of the loop by applying the pliers.
